I examine each pup for slight differences at birth. Sometimes there is so little difference that it's very difficult to tell. The easiest way is by chest markings, then toes, ears, chins, etc. With our current litter of 5 girls, Star was very easy because she was almost totally dark with a very small white star on her chest and she is the smallest. Love has white on her chest, another easy one to tell. And both Star and Love had their ears up from the beginning, never once flopped down. But then there is Faith, Hope and Charity. They were so close in size and color it was really difficult, but then after really close looking at all three, I discovered that Faith had a slight darker rim around her ears and a dark chin. Hope had more goldish ears and a dark chin. And Charity had the goldish ears and a gold chin. Charity also had some white on the bottom of her paws. Now that they are 6 weeks old, I still have to look at ears and chin to tell who is who.
