I have heard the opposite that males tend to pick a favorite and females share affection equally. Atleast that is what I heard and it holds true in my house. As far as the male vs female, I personally prefer to get females. Why? Only for the fact that males have certain habits such as humping and marking everywhere and it is not always corrected by neutering them even at a young age. Other than that, I love males just as much as females. Oh and if I were to breed I would get small males and bigger females around 6 pounds. This is just my opinion of the subject.
