Default What would cause this cough??

9 month old male, he only coughs when he is relaxing- getting ready to take a nap or go to sleep for the night. He doesn't cough during the day, during periods of excitement or play. Only when he is settling down for a nap.
The cough can sometimes be the honking type, non productive and it only happens for a little bit. Mostly it's kind of like he "huffs" several times. Maybe for approximately 2-3 minutes while he is getting settled down, then it may happen 2-3 times during the course of the night. No other symptoms- he doesn't sound raspy when he breathes or appear to feel bad in any way.
What could it be? I have never experienced kennel cough or collapsed trachea- so I am wondering if either of those that might be involved? Allegies or a cold?
A vet visit is planned, but in the mean time.... Any ideas what could be causing this?
