I have the same problem! We have a new neighbor with an older pit. It wags it's tail while it attacks the fence and barks ferociously at the same time. I don't get this behavior either. It does this to my children and to all of my dogs. This pit has sent my 6 year old son screaming into the house because of the attacking of the fence. It is scary and even I have jumped out my skin when he's done it to me. I am home during the day and I always go out with my little dogs and kids. I didn't use to but I am afraid one of my smaller dogs might find some kind of little hole to squeaze through or something. But if I wasn't home I would do exactly as maddierudymom suggested. I have a chain link pen outside I put my small dogs in when I can't watch them, it is also covered because we have many hawks. If you butted one up against the doggie door you would have no worries while you were away.
