I just hung the bells on the door they understand that they make noise when the door opens. My yorkies are 5yr 4yr 14 mths .They just started to paw at the bells when they want to go out,my smallest one rings them with his nose.I didn,t have to train thhem it came natural. Also I have an alarm system that chimes when any door or window opens. When spring came and I opened the window ,it went off and they all three ran to see who was at the door. They get use to certain sounds .Just hang up the Bells and one day you hear them ring .Thats how it worked for me.The down side is Bear rings the bells for attention,I go to let him out and there he sits with a toy.In the beginning it was cute, now it is annoying. It took about 2weeks for the first ring.
