Puppies have different nutritional needs than adults. Most vets recommend changing to adult once the puppy is through the growth stage and some are even recommending that they start adult food as early as 3 months. It is not good to keep them on puppy food and can lead to obesity. Begin mixing small amounts of the adult with the puppy and gradually add more until they are eating only the adult formula.

I have never personally heard of a breeder recommending the puppies remain on puppy food. You would be better supplementing with something like Missing Link with fatty acids for better coats.
