Any way the driver's ed cars had two brakes...driver's side and passenger side...(you know, in case the teacher HAD to stop some stupid maneuverer ya pulled on the street.) During the parallel test, they'd have two students in a vehicle and the teacher would be outside grading your parking job. My buddy in the passenger side worked the brake while I parallel parked.
