I knew nothing about dew claws and had a young dog that was constantly licking her front leg. And, it was so sore, she wouldn't let me near it. But I did check it out and her nail had grown around in a circle and right back into her leg, and she had a very sore infected area that must have hurt her a lot.

I took her to the vet, and he removed her dew claws. She was probably about 6 months old then and recovered quickly. I can promise you that she was much more comfortable when she came home from the vet after her surgery than she was before her surgery.

My vet said hers needed to be removed because of the way they were growing. He said she would constantly have problems with them, and it would just be best to remove them...... which we did, and, of course, we had no further problems.

Good luck - Carol Jean
