Well I was in the navy for a while, and I met A LOT of contractors. Most of them did get paid a lot but there were many drawbacks. The biggest was no benefits, it doesn't matter as much if you are single, but if you have a family the lack of medical benefits can really hurt. You would also have to save up for your own retirement, which is harder. They would have to work at the drop of a hat, they would get paid fat bank, but it would be really crazy like being on call and working in the middle of the night or weekends to traveling around the world and being gone weeks on end.
If you have a family I would definately say #2. My husband was just offered a job like #1 and I told him to turn it down. Benefits are such a big deal when you have a kid.
