Tatum is crated during the day when no one is home. That's usually for a stretch of 4-5 hours at a time. She sleeps with us at night. I really think she's comfortable and feels safe in the crate.
I used to feel that crating dogs was a bit cruel until my sister showed me how well behaved her three (one being a Great Dane) were after crate training them. All she did was say "kennel up" and all three ran straight to their bedroom that had all their crates and loaded up and waited for their treat. (Of course the Great Dane's "crate" was a really large wire cage!)
I just feel much more comfortable knowing that there have been no accidents or worse, catastrophies where she gets hurt while we're away.
