I lived in a townhouse for a couple of months when we sold our last house. I think renting one is good - but buying can have more downsides. These are the things we realised:
-if it's a shared driveway becareful on who pays for what
-your neighbours value directly affects your home's value because they are attached (even more so than single family homes)
-when you want to improve the outside of your home it can be difficult to coordinate with the neighbours
-you can often still hear your neighbours even with good sound proofing

Just our opinions though.
