I would weigh the Pros and cons of each and then decide. Like freedom vs association rules, future value of each, maintenance vs no maintenance, association fees vs maybe getting someone to mow your lawn,neighbors being right on top of you if you don't like them etc. If I were alone I would go into a townhome or condo.
