Default Puppy Biting

How long does this go on for? When Badger first came to me, he was quite 'bitey' but it seems to have calmed down considerably in the last seven weeks. I was very firm with the 'yelping' and also saying 'no biting' to him in a firm and low voice. Now I just have to say 'no biting' and he seems to not want to do it but it's almost like a compulsion with him that he can't control. He gets very excited when he sees me first thing in the morning and he jumps in my lap and mouths my hand - no teeth - just his gums (which is kind of weird). During the day when we play or I go out for a bit and then come back, he gets excited again but this time in between the kisses, he does these little bites or he'll lunge at my nose. None of it hurts but it just kind of concerns me because if it's a puppy phase then fine but if it goes on into adulthood I won't be happy. Any thoughts or advice?
