When I first started putting Sweetie's hair up I used small hair clips, the kind that are open and you punch the back into the front - they kept her hair up longer & stayed in pretty good, too. When she got older and her hair got thicker I started using these tiny covered rubber bands - I think Scrunci makes them.
Good luck - now all I have to say is "Come let me fix your hair" and Sweetie is right there-
