Default a technical answer

If you want a technical answer to the question of why, here is one:

When Windows ran its update, it updated the display drivers and set them to the default resolution. Your monitor is larger than default, so you had to set the resolution to the one that supports your screen size.

In lamens terms, Microsoft Windows isn't all that smart.
