I do not think your dog wants more freedom by himself. Just the opposite. Because the space is big (to him), he becomes bored. He didn't know how to entertain himself or what to do with himself. More toys at this point won't help him either.

I'd crate him for now, until he learned how to spend his time alone. What you want to do is to increase his space slowly and little by little.
