Do have to kennel him during the day? Perhaps you could block off a larger area with a baby gate or an x pen, so he isn't confined to such a small area. then leave his bed and toys and food and a pee pad.

Ollie cried at night too when she was crated. She cried loud and frequently. I finally took the door off of the crate and blocked off the laundry area so she had more space. She sleeps in the crate, with the door off, her food and pee pad are in the area also.
