I cut my baby's hair myself too. I'm too paranoid to take her to the groomer's - she is so squirmy and I definitely don't want her head in a noose. I also use a good pair of actual hair trimming scissors and cut it like you describe. Sometimes she sits better than others and I usually take a few days of additional trimming. I have been pleased with my results also.
