My vet told me something similar (years ago) because one of my other dogs had a habit of doing this. It never seemed to hurt him.
I have heard that you can put something in the water to slow down their drinking, as goofy as this sounds, it might have been a rock? I'm not sure that's right, but it was something solid that they'd have to drink around.
