 The flavor of the bread is determined by the beer you use.  You don't want to use light beer.  I love this bread with homemade soup in the winter time and I use a dark ale so it has a strong flavor of the hops.  The top is a little lumpy looking but reminds me of European bread - which I like...
 
 P.S.  I don't know if you can substitute the butter - I somewhat doubt it but you are the expert on that..

  Thanks, Cindy, and yes, I substitute Smart Balance for all butter/margerine ingredients and it works great! I don't have any self-rising flour, so this will have to wait. Also, it's been so long since I have had any beer in the house it will be wierd to buy some!  I would probably have to get some from my daughter, lol!!  It would be too tempting to have it in the fridge! lolol
