We can be upset at our country's dependence on foreign oil and becuase we have become dependent on foreign oil. I come from an area of the U.S. that is rich in oil and gas deposits - but instead of drilling and bringing it up - we have bought from foreign producers.
We can be upset because our country has not done enough to develop alternative fuel sources and our car manufacturers have not done enough to develop engines that run longer on less fuel.
We can be mad about how our cities have been developed - in most subdivisions, you can't walk to the grocery store or to any other services that you might need. We don't have neighborhood schools, for the most part, so that kiddos could walk (and in many places, it is too dangerous to walk).
In my city, they are trying to build a few apartment complexes and some neighborhoods that have groceries, cafes, dry cleaners, etc etc, within walking distance so people are not so dependent on cars to get everywhere.
Most mid size cities don't have adequate mass transit systems and most of us are so used to having access to our cars, that we don't want to use public transportation - however, I'm beginning to think seriously about it.
There are lots of things, that we could/should do to reduce dependence on oil - especially foreign oil! With the price of gas skyrocketing - we will have to do just that - look for alternative ways to live our lives, less dependent on oil.
