Ok here's my crazy way of putting her hair up. It's really not too crazy but its probably going to sound like it. I sit on the floor with my legs out in a V shape and put her in between them facing away from me. I have her sit down and I cross one leg over the other in front of her. Think indian style but only one leg crossed with the dog in the middle. She usually will lay her head down on my leg and sit there until I'm done. This way worked great for me in the beginning because it let me hold her with my legs and free up both hands to do the hair. Now she's used to it and I don't need to cross my leg unless her mind is somewhere else, like catching those pesky cats.

As far as hair bands go I have found that the plain rubberband looking ones are the best at staying in. You get them in the hair section and they are about the size, well just big enough to fit around a finger maybe. These work great especially if you pup is the kind that still likes to pull them out. And if they get tangled you can just cut them to get them out. As far as the ouchless goes that is what I prefer now because it does the least damage to the hair(I think) but I've found that they can come in different thicknesses and I prefer the thin ones. I didn't know this until I bought some thicker ones, they just don't stretch as well making it harder to get them in and tight enough to actually stay in. The ouchless ones slide out easier though so if your pup is a wild one or trys to get it out then its easier to start with the plain rubber ones. Other than that my fav thing is the small butterfly clips they work great to just toss their hair up real quick, although Reagan does tend to get these out every now and then. Just watch them with these, Reagan doesn't try to swallow them but I'm sure some pups will.
