Our trainer does not allow choke collars. The only reason for the collar in her puppy classes is to attach a leash to so the dogs don't run away. Our more advanced classes were mostly off leash. We did not do any sort of physical correction.

I took Loki in on a regular harness. The trainer immediately convinced me to put him in an Easy Walk harness, which is AWESOME. He does not pull even on walks (vs. just behaving at class). I love it and recommend them to everyone.

Right now we are in Canine Good Citizen classes and they do not allow a harness during the test, but after regular obedience classes they assume your dog will not require a no-pull harness. We are working on walking with a loose leash on a collar every day now, and he is improving!
