I think they all look the same

While haircuts make a huge difference, the biggest problem is poor breeding. All Yorkies are incredibly cute, even poor examples of the breed. That's the problem. Someone with two cute pets can't resist the urge to breed them, then they sell those poor quality pups with full breeding rights. And the cycle continues. We end up with pups looking less and less like Yorkies.
