Not only do they get lonely, they can also shows signs of detachment and grief. I had my own business from home so I was there most of the time. When I had to go away, Reggie would stay with Grandma. She would not eat and sat at the door and cry until I returned. I've had more than one dog show very noticeable signs of grief when their playmate passed away, even if there was a difference in breeds and age, and even if the playmate was a cat. Right now we are experiencing just that. Our Reggie of 7 years just passed away suddenly this past Tuesday. She left us with 5 baby girls eight days old to tend to. Even though I have to bottle feed the pups, her daughter, Sissy, stepped in and is caring for the babies even though she has not milk. And more surprising, her granddaugther, Roxie, is right there helping. Her other very independent daughter, Sassy, has become a lap dog all of a sudden. They know someone is missing.
