I think "yes" and "no."
I do think that little puppys - when they are first taken away from their mother and litter mates - and are expected to sleep alone (in a crate or in another room) for the first time in their life - are very lonely - and frightened as well. This is why I let my little pup sleep with me from day one.
I got my pup when he was 8 weeks old - and stayed home with him the first week. The second week, he stay with my sister. The third week, he had neighbors dropping by once or twice a day to check on him. Since then, he has been left alone when I work (6 hours -four days a week).
I always leave quickly without announcing to him that I'm going - and, I have often stayed outside the door for several minutes to see if he starts whinning, but he never does.
I know dogs sleep some 14 hours a day (house dogs especially) -- and it is obvious often when I get home that he has been sleeping ---because he is stretching and yawning when I come into the house. But - he certainly is excited. And - he's just as excited if I go outside for only 20 minutes and then come back in.
I leave lights and a radio on for him - and all the things he needs. I think he does just fine - mainly because things have been this way for him most of his life. He really doesn't know anything different.
***** When I am home all day (three days a week) --- he still sleeps most of the time. And, he doesn't stay with me all the time. More often than not, he is off in another part of the house sleeping or doing his own thing.
BUT - after all is said and done -- this is just the way it has to be for us. I have to work - and he has to stay home. Darn! I'd much rather be a stay-at-home mom......wouldn't we all!!!!!
