Sounds like he is getting the hang of things!

We have started our first week of the "get tough on training" with our puppy Tia, and she did SO well on her first day today. I attached her to a lead and didn't let her out of my sight all day. She went peepee in the laundry room (not on the pad, but it is an improvement over the carpet) EVERY TIME today!

You just have to figure out what works for you, be consistant (which we weren't until now) and go from there! I wish you continued success!
