LIGHTLY spray on a dry coat. I have used it on wet also....and it can help with matts.
Another great product you can get cheap for matts and tangles is JOHNSONS NO MORE TANGLES for Babies.....Spray directly on the tangle and work it out with your fingers....A groomer I used to go to swore by this stuff and it DOES work - for about 5 $$
