Default Cindy Adams: Living A Dog's Life Book Review

Review from the Long Island Press
---
Cindy Adams, the long time gossip columnist for the New York Post, recently learned that while all that glitters is not gold, pets are worth their weight in platinum.

Adams suffered the death of her mother, her husband and her dog, Jazzy, all in a short period of time.

"I had no family and no siblings to turn to, but from the unconditional love given from my dogs and being able to care for them, that got me through it," says Adams, who tells all in her new book, Living A Dog's Life: Jazzy, Juicy, and Me, a follow-up to 2004's The Gift Of Jazzy.

Adams is delivered Jazzy, a 3-month-old Yorkshire terrier, in the middle of a dinner party after her husband's death in 1999. Somewhat mystified by this "moving package that looked like a wind-up toy," Adams calls Joan Rivers, another Yorkie enthusiast, for care tips. Rivers tells her to get the pup water immediately. Adams responds like a true society gal: "Perrier or imported sparkling?" Jazzy responds to his watering by peeing on his new human's leg. "That wasn't the first time that I have been peed on in the business," quips Adams.

So starts a love affair. Adams bonds deeply with Jazzy, acquiring another pet, Juicy, to keep him company. All is well until the New York blackout of August, 2003, when Jazzy becomes ill at a kennel upstate. He later dies from E. coli poisoning.

Adams, who sits on the board of directors of the ASPCA, goes into a slump, "right into the fetal position," she says. Still, she knows she needs to do something for Juicy, who is also depressed from the loss and not eating. A fondly named Jazzy Jr. enters the family, bringing back life for both Adams and Juicy.

The rest of Adams' undying puppy love is shared in this heartwarming and wacky memoir, a must-read for all animal lovers. Living a Dog's Life is nicely written, a fun read and a true life lesson about unconditional love that pets give us.
