I have a question...

I am 18 years old and I live with my brother (23) and my parents.
My brother and I are really considering getting a Yorkie and I have a few inquiries.
My brother is at work from 9-5 monday through friday and I go to college 4 days a week..Usually from 11-5 or from 9-2. The dog wouldn't be left alone for more than 5 hours at a time but that is not garaunteed. How do you guys (the ones that work/go to school/lead lives) do it? I am sure there are ways around it and I don't want my schedule to be the reason we don't get the dog. Also how are Yorkies when they first move in? The one I am looking at is 8 weeks. In terms of scratching, will my house be ruined? If there are any guidelines that you guys can give me while caring for a Yorkie as a new prospective pet (and dog) owner.
