When my daugther was really young...like in the toddler years, it was VERY easy to keep her away from the yorkies when needed. Baby gates did the job just fine, and when I wasn't able to totally supervise, I put them in playpens or other rooms of the house. As far as her friends that come over, we have strict rules concerning the yorkies. They are allowed to pet and play with our adults, but not pups.. and not unless I AM THERE. I can honestly say that I've never had one bad incident with my child and my dogs.
Children are a part of most people's lives and I don't feel that just because we have children that we should be deprived of also owning a yorkie or any small breed. I had yorkies before I had a child. My daughter has really benefited from growing up around yorkies. She now is embarking on jr showmanship and is so excited about getting started. When her pin finally arrived in the mail she was ecstatic! She has become quite the yorkie fancier, can do a bath and brush out herself with the upmost care and gentleness (yes, this is true!) and I am thankful that she was always around them from baby-hood until now at almost 9 yrs old. She has learned so much, and has a true passion for these little doggies. What really blows my mind is when she points out things to me that SHE notices in certain pups... My yorkies have given my child such a head start in the world of dogs and I feel good that I've been able to provide her with that.
