I didn't train my other Yorkie to bark. She just started doing that one day. I've heard of the bell thing on the door, but sometimes she'll be locked in our bedroom with us and not able to "ring the bell" at the outside door. She knows to go outside, she just doesn't tell us when she has to go. I usually can tell by her mannerisms but I can't watch her every second of every day! I just wish she'd bark or paw at me or something.
