Just a little insite for you, odds are you will not find anyone to sell you a bitch as a starting dog. They will be more willing to sell a dog to you, to make sure you really are interested in showing, and if you do so with a dog, then they will be more likely to sell you a female. Good breeders are very selective when it comes to placing their bitches, they don't want any of their dogs to end up with someone that really only wants to breed and sell puppies. I know when I started I had gotten a dog as a pet, that actually was good enough to get me started into showing. Only after I was showing for a couple of years would any one even think of selling me a show quality dog.

MM, You made so much sense....and to think I never even gave that a thought. But, I was lucky years ago when I showed schnauzers to start with a "small bitch" that the breeder thought probably would not be able to finish, or maybe that she did not want to invest the time in finishing her....would take to long......well, I bought her and invested in most of the pts, and then I sent her out with a handler and finished her......YEA! Then, because I trusted the original breeder, I allowed her to decide when my bitch came into heat, which male she would recommend, based on improving the line.....well, you guessed it.....I got very lucky, bred back to one of my breeders males, and ended up with one of the TOP males in that kennel.....beautiful Champion boy.....but, it all happened because I had a breeder give me a chance.......

I never bred my bitch again, I got lucky, not only did I find the bitch I wanted the first time out, but also got a mentor, and I helped her with her line and I never strayed out of her direction regarding what was best for the breed.........and her kennel.

Luckily, I am still a big advocate for breed standard and will never have my own kennel, but I sure as heck can help some other kennel expand their name with finishing my bitch or dog in conformation. I guess the thrill of the ribbon is what I like.....and the cute little face.....LOL
