Can you move his crate to the other side of the bed? Then if you need to get up in the middle of the night he won't see you, but he will still be close enough to hear you and know you are there. Or maybe place a towel over the door while he is sleeping in it? When Mia and Leo were little, they seemed to sleep much better if there was a towel or a blanket over the door. I would do that during the day when they were napping, it would kind of muffle the other household noises so they slept better. (babies need their sleep, ya know!
