He was allowed to nibble at it- then I took his paw and said "paw". We progressed from there soon not lett him nibble on the treat (I keep the treats behind my back till he gives paw) He got it really quick- 10-15 minutes later he would sit and raise his little paw.
It made me wonder though- do dogs have a dominant paw? I started using his right paw but he kept trying to give me both paws until i used his left paw. He was find with just giving me the left... haha.. is that just me?)
GOOD LUCK!!!!
When our ChowChow was a pup, I would ask for his paw. I would then pick it up, shake it and because Cyrus loved Doritos and he would get one as a treat. I kept doing that until he got the hang of it, which didn't take long because he wanted more treats. Then I added "Give me 5" and "Shake". Within a day he was doing it. Then I'd ask for his other paw, and he would raise that one. I don't suggest using Doritos as a treat for yorkies, but treats work.
