Well I understand the idea of 1500 per pup sounding outragous, at one time I stood in your shoes. However before breeding Bridget I looked into the cost and to be honest it is expensive. You have the pre natal type test on the bitch around 150 here plus if you own the male test on him as well. If you do not own the stud you then have thst fee to deal with anywhere from 200-500 around here. I then had an ultrasound 45, regular check ups, at 30 a pop and then the exray at the end to give an idea of size another 85. Some people dont do the ultrasound, which I agree is a non useable expense really. I also had a emergency c-section which many of these little ones need 545.00. At three to five days old you take them in for a check up and docking, I wouldnt want to do that myself which was 100, I also had to get ll the whelping supplies before we knew we needed a c section, about 100 there too. This does not include the 2 sets of shots, 3 wormings and check ups I get on my pups, nor the puppy pack I give which includes toys, food, blanket, treats, buddy belt and leash, small food and water dish, wee wee pads, and a crate. Yes I send my puppies home with lots of goodies.
This leave me with a cost not including my time or worry over the duration of more than 2000 in my case. For the 3 pups I am selling I walk away with about 2400 in profit, if I add my time in over the twelve week period, I am being paid less than 1 dollar an hour actully it works out some where in the neiborhood of 80 cents and hour. I also have not included other incientals such as gas for to and from the vet, food for the mommy dog, calcium tablets for mom, or the added expense of having to hand raise puppies. My mom did have an infection afterwards due to small placental tissue, which cost me about 245 for the removal and anitboitics to get her better.
I am not in this for the money, because all and all, I make next to nothing, and my real job pays me much, much better. 2400 is less than most people make in a month, and I get it over the span of three, so next time you gasp at the 1500 dollar price tag, be thankful I and many of my breeeder buddies are not charging the 3000-5000 that some do, because then we would have a bit of money to help line our pockets.
SOrry not trying to be rude, just help people understand, yes, some people sell puppies for 700, but many times they get sick puppies from people that have done as little as possible just to make that all mighty dollar. Mine are healthy, happy and well prepared for their new home.
