I think it depends on the guy. I had a boyfriend that spent all his money on drugs and then came crying to me because he needed this stuff for his class that would cost $300 so what did my dumb butt do but give him the money. Did I get paid back? Never. He was dragging me down with the drugs & he was failing out of school and I told him he had to get his life together or I was gone. He told me to go that drugs were more important than me. And then he badmouthed me to all his friends. I loved him and felt sorry for him because his mom was dieing of cancer and he took advantage of that.
When me and my husband were dating he came up short on rent one month. He was going to an expensive school and his family just didn't have the money to help so I payed his rent that month. I never worried about getting it back because I knew someday we would be married and he would have a good job and take care of me. And that's exactly how it worked out. I also know he really needed the money and that he wasn't just playing me.
It sounds to me like this guy is playing you. He doesn't respect you and he doesn't care about your feeling. I know how hard it is, I was always someone that tried to save people too. You can't save someone that doesn't want to be saved. and trust me he doesn't want to be saved.
