Went to the dog park and saw a Toy Yorkie this weekend. (I'm upset...) To be honest, I was quite upset to see the Toy Yorkie at the dog park.
Here are my reasons:
1) The Yorkie was only 5 months old (not that is a major factor yet...)
2) But it also ONLY weighed in at roughly 4 pounds!
3) Any owner should realize that a dog this small SHOULD NOT be left to roam around at the dog park (unless at close distances) due to the sheer differences in size compared to most "normal" small dogs.
My Yorkie (10 months, 7 pounds)...went up to the Toy, and obviously was curious about him. He was a bit rough w/ the dog...I will admit. I was watching my dog like a hawk! I was afraid that my dog would hurt the little yorkie.
It wasn't that I was afraid of my dog per say. My Yorkie is actually quite wonderful w/ other dogs. He is somewhat submissive, but will bark and growl when other dogs get too close for his personal comfort. But he doesn't bite them...only tries to basically tell them to back off.
Needless to say, the aggression by my dog...made the owners of the Toy Yorkie leave the park. I was always watching my dog intently. But it wasn't necessarily my dog being aggressive. Rather, it was the inherent dangers of bringing a dog that is so small and fragile to the dog park. I know of owners of puppies, who IF they decide to bring their dogs to the park, they keep them in their arms. There were even two Malteses that were of similiar size to the Toy Yorkie this weekend.
But I just wanted to say that if you own a Toy Yorkie, please be aware of the size differences of your dog and monitor your dog more closely. I was well aware of this Toy Yorkie and was afraid of it's safety. And yet the owners let it run around a good 30 feet ahead of them.
Maybe I'm biased since I own a "normal" sized Yorkie. But when we go to the dog park, Yorkies seem to be the smaller sized dog in the "small dog" area. And for a Toy Yorkie to be in the bullpen...is...quite upsetting for me.
Just thought I would voice my opinion. I do monitor my Yorkie at the dog park. I try to follow him around the various areas that he roams to. I do admit that I do lose sight of him at times. But Toy Yorkies at a dog park...are at such risk of getting hurt from ANY dog!
Feel free to discuss/voice your opinions.
