I don't think all dogs need it done. So if you don't see a sign, I wouldn't worry about it.
Did you check his bottom - maybe he has a dingle-berry stuck to his hair. One time Hercules basically stuck his butt in face and I was like eww, it smells like poop. I looked at his butt, and he had some dried poop stuck to his hair. He was letting me know!! haha
Hercules had his anal glands secreted when he was small. It didn't seem to hurt him. Maybe check with your vet or call them.
