The belly band idea might not work because you are gone all day and he needs to go out to go potty. Belly bands are great for around the house when you are home to change it or take him out. Is his doggy door accessed from your kitchen? If so, I would just block him in the kitchen during the day. And tell hubby, the "make him an outside dog" idea is not good!
