I don't use a retractable leash for Tatum. There have been a few times while at the ballpark that I had to use her leash (attached to a harness) to literally pull her up into my arms when another dog came at her in a menacing way. Even if you're not in a situation like that, there are still times you need to get your dog in your arms or at your side in a hurry and that's harder to do with the retractable.
I can understand using one to take walks in an area where there is no danger (traffic, other animals) but can't give any advice in that area.
