I wouldn't put the puppy in the bathroom. When I would leave for lengths of time, I felt bad leaving Emmy in the crate so I would put her in the bathroom with the babygate. One day I came home and I guess she had gotten into something and she got sick.
I am a college student and have a pretty busy schedule. My advice is to start crate training right away. At first, the puppy will whine and cry, but after a weeks time she'll get used to it and be fine. Emmy has no problem being in her crate for 3-4 hours at a time and is 4 1/2 months old. It has REALLY helped with potty training too. From day one I started bringing her outside, and shes 99.9% trained.
