I looked into this about 2 years ago. From what I was told at the time, you still need a prescription from your vet for the heartworm prevention for sure.
I'm not sure about the flea/tick preventative -- as you can buy the same stuff from pet stores so probably don't need one for that. Anyway, after it was all said and done, the price worked out about the same just buying it from my vet. Good luck in whatever you decide.
