Acid Reflux
Your stomach is filled with acid. Its purpose is to help digest the food you eat. This acid is as strong as battery acid. Your stomach is built to handle it. Your esophagus (the tube that carries food from your throat to your stomach) isn’t.
So when acid backs up into your esophagus, it can cause heartburn, which is the most common symptom of acid reflux disease.

I can't imagine why a dog couldn't experience "heartburn." If so, an occasional Tums wouldn't hurt them. I have given them to my dogs occasionally.
