I'm new here this week, too! (and a new yorkie mom!)
My 5 month old yorkie, Topher, developed a cough a few weeks ago and when I brought him to the vet I was surprised that the diagnosis was tonsillitis! It was just a mild case, but the doc put him on antibiotics for 14 days and it cleared up quite well.
During the first week, the vet said that he might find hard food irritating on his sore little throat, so we mainly gave him soft food for that time.
According to my vet, tonsillitis isn't uncommon in yorkies.
