McMinnville, OR - A pit bull attacked a Yorkshire terrier Thursday morning in the U.S. Bank Plaza in downtown McMinnville, quickly inflicting fatal injuries.
Steve Thompson of McMinnville, enjoying the plaza with a 7-year-old terrier named Spike, said his dog's injuries were so severe it had to be put to sleep.
Yorkies are no match for big and powerful pit bulls. Their weight should not exceed 7 pounds, according to the breed standards of the American Kennel Club.
Police did not arrive on the scene until after the attack was over, but witnesses said it was unprovoked.
Thompson said he was with a group of people and never saw the other dog coming. Had he recognized its presence, he would have immediately scooped up his own dog, he said, as it had been attacked before.
The News-Register was unable to locate the pit bull's owner for comment.
However, county dog control officer Tanya Pitt said the owner had just obtained the dog a couple of days earlier and readily agreed to sign it over to the county.
Because the owner did not have proof of rabies vaccination, the dog will be held in quarantine for 10 days, then most likely destroyed. Pitt said the county does not normally offer for adoption dogs with a history of violence.
Thompson said he was bitten several times by the pit bull while trying in vain to rescue his terrier. He must await word from Dog Control on whether he will need to undergo vaccination for rabies himself.
No citations were issued, according to Officer Josh Sheets of the McMinnville Police Department.
Spike will be buried Sunday in a ceremony to be conducted by friends, Thompson said.
