I have never had a dog and he was sick in the beginning when we got him at Christmas so taking him out into the cold was not an option. Someone mentioned a litter box but I don't really know the pros and cons between taking him out and using the box (besides it will be outside and I won't have to clean it). We do leave food & water out with him and he has the living room, kitchen, and hallway to roam thru the day (too much freedom, maybe). I do have a crazy schedule so I started makring out time to come home and take him out at lunch, trying not to leave him longer than 6 hours (one hour for each of the months that he is). I am not sure if the things that I have learned so far are right or not. Should I put his food down for 1 hour and then take it up? Do I take him outside immediately after getting up? How soon after he eats do I take him out? Is a playpen better than a crate? I am lost if anyone can help me I would be REALLY grateful!!!! And do they really need someone to play with - like another dog? My email is xtreme53@aol.com |
He is obviously not using the pee pads so why don't you try outside? He is old enough to be crate trained, which is the best way to go. 6 hours is probably too long though. Loki is over a year old and I don't leave him 6 hours. That formula does not work for little dogs. They typically can't hold it 8 hours until they are 2. Loki will never be able to go 8 hours, nor would I expect him to. There is great info out there on crate training, it's not worth me repeating here. Just do a search.
Put his food down for 20 mins. He needs to eat when you feed him and he will learn that in a day or two. Loki rarely leaves his bowl full and he is so well trained now that if I forget to pick it up he will wait until the next feeding time to eat it - that's just when he's hungry. Its easier to housetrain him if you do this.
Also, Loki seems fine hanging out all day but twice a month or so I send him to daycare to run around with the other dogs. He comes home really tired :-)
