Default My older girl is transitioning.

Canela, who I've had the privilege to look after for almost 17 1/2 years, is transitioning and I can tell you that it is so very difficult for me to see.

Three weeks ago, I noticed she was getting picky with her food. And during all this time, I've gotten such a variety of food to encourage her to eat -- she does so, but then stops paying attention to it. Three days ago, she fully stopped eating even half a meal and licks just whatever I put for her. Because of this, she is weak and has lost about half her size. There's no yelping, no crying, no signs of distress -- it's just like she's ready.

We have an appointment with the vet this week, but I don't know if she'll make it -- they've seen her for about sixteen of those years and know all her history. I know 17 1/2 is a long time, and this is age related, but nevertheless, it hurts. She doesn't have any life taking illnesses, aside from some tartar buildup that can't be removed because she probably won't do well with the anesthesia. And has some cataract issues mostly on one eye. Her hearing is almost gone, though I swear she'll hear the smallest things and go to it sometimes. But age spares no one when one is lucky to accumulate it.

When she came to me at 7 months old, I never expected so much to happen in my life, and those around me, and she's been around for all of it. I just pray that she goes softly in her sleep -- I just can't "put her down" as it feels like I would just be giving up.
