Kidney disease is devastating and it sounds like Mia is very ill. With one like that, they usually hospitalize for IV fluids for a few days to try to stabilize them. Yes, it is expensive but you can buy time. I went throught it with two of my pups a couple of years ago....they were siblings and were poisoned (long story) .. they were in stage 4 when diagnosed yet with hospitalization and with me doing the things you mentioned about plus some meds for appetite, they lived for another 18 months. They had been given only days to weeks when first diagnosed.

It is very serious but you can buy time. I wish I could say there is a magical cure, but they don't do kidney transplants in dogs.

Keeping you and Mia in my thoughts.

PS. You need to have ONE vet and not a walk in vet. Someone you can rely on. And, yes, if you go to an EC at night or on weekends it is terribly expensive.
I advise every new pet owner that I meet to get insurance because the cost of vet care is rising to a crazy point now!
Thank you for the advice and suggestions, they were really appreciated. Unfortunately, my princess didn't make it. She passed Thursday, May 23rd (10 days after). Our princess will forever be missed and we are all still trying to get passed it. I wish I knew the things to look out for and the checkups I needed frequently. My princess was the most energetic and welcoming dog I knew, everyone loved her for her bullying persona. This was definitely unforeseen and it hurt us all alot. If only first time pet owners came with a manual.

Nevertheless, I wont dwell on what could have been or where we went wrong. She was loved and spoiled and thats whats important. Moving forward, Im taking all the necessary precautions with her brother, Max. As per his new vet, his bloodwork came back good. Im still trying to understand bloodwork results myself although his BUN level is at 40, his creatine and phosphorus are normal.

Yesterday, he had a dental scaling and had 3 more teeth pulled. Ive been thinking about switching him to more of a wet food now that he has less teeth but its been a little difficult to find one. He's always been a picky eater. I recently introduced salmon oil to his meal. He's 9yrs old so not sure if I should also look into supplements or anything of that extent. Any suggestions around food and supplements would be appreciated.

Thank you xoxo
