IT was a process. Once he mastered sit and laydown (which he picked up VERY quickly) it was a process to teach him stay. When he first learned laydown he would get the small treat right away. After awhile I would have him stay in the laydown position while he got the treat. When he did that regularly I waited a couple seconds before giving treat. If at anytime he got up I said "no" and made him laydown again. After he mastered the few seconds, i would do the same but look away and see if he would still stay. (Mind you, this took many days!! hehe) after that I would try walking a step or two away. Then calling "come" before he would get the treat. Now I can walk out of his sight and call come from the next room. It takes a lot of work because the pup thinks you forgot about them if you wait too long. I tried to help him out by repeating the command while he was staying that way he knew I hadn't forgotten about him. All in all it took about three weeks for him to become comfortable with me leaving the room and him staying in the laydown position, but he finally got it! I hope that helps! I was at a loss when I started too- it takes baby steps! Goodluck!!!
